Our treaties are reflected in our project name—Apoqnmatulti’k—we help each other.

Just as the treaties were established to ensure peace and friendship, this project involves shared participation among Mi’kmaw, local and academic knowledge holders as the key to aquatic stewardship, with equal value placed on each knowledge system.

Treaty Day marks the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month. However, Treaty Day is also an opportunity to acknowledge how we must continue to build our relationship in support of the treaties. The spirit of Apoqnmatulti’k honours our relationship, and we are encouraged by the steps taken in this project to create a successful partnership built on co-learning.

Our collaborative approach will ensure that the valuable information on animal movements is shared with decision-makers and those who depend on these critical resources in our communities.

“Treaties affect us all, we are all treaty people”
