$1.5 million newly awarded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) will enable the continuation of a successful partnership—Apoqnmatulti’k [Mi'kmaw for 'we help each other'] — a collaboration between the Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources (UINR), the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq/Mi’kmaw Conservation Group (CMM/MCG), the Marine Institute of Natural and Academic Science (MINAS), the Ocean Tracking Network (OTN), Dalhousie University, Acadia University, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).
The true strength of Apoqnmatulti'k comes from the relationships and trust that have been built and the lessons learned along the way. It is those relationships that underpin the project's scientific outcomes and successes.

Today is the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which emerged from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Call to Action #80. This is a day for recognition and remembrance of the ongoing harm caused by residential schools. It is also a day for reflection and action.
Apoqnmatulti’k’s purpose extends well beyond aquatic animal tracking and the collection of scientific data—it provides a scaffold for co-learning, equal participation, and building relationships and trust.
