Skyler Jeddore has begun tagging eels in the East Bay area. Forty eels are being floy tagged and surgically implanted with an acoustic tag then being released back in to the lake. The first batch were released outside of John Paul’s pond on Friday August 2, 2019. They have a thin green tag attached above the dorsal fin (see pic) and a small incision on their stomach with 2-3 stitches. These tags will help us better understand the movements of the American Eel in the Bras d’Or Lake. If you find a live eel with a tag, please release it. In the case of mortality, please let Skyler Jeddore know when and where the eel was killed.
While no studies have shown that the anaesthetic used during surgery remains in the tissue of the eel after a day or two, we ask that you not consume any eels that have been tagged.
